William Jerome Page

Birth Name William Jerome Page
Gender male
Age at Death unknown

Narrative

In 1900, William J. Page was living with his parents at 104 Brooks St., East Boston and was working as a painter. In 1902 they may have been at 144 Webster St., East Boston, since William's sister, Abbie (Page) Heise, says she was widowed and "at home" at that address when she re-married.

William and Margaret were married in Veazie, Maine, in 1905, and gave their residence as Bangor. The civil marriage record from the Maine Vital Records gives the date of 25 Apr 1905. William was 22 and Margaret's age was said to be 18. They were married by Elmer Pember. (Mr. Pember, on the 1900 Census, was a clergyman, living at 115 Center St., Bangor. A family history at Google Books states that he was the pastor of the First Universalist Church in Bangor from 1890 to about 1911.)

An image of the church marriage certificate signed by Mr. Pember shows that the witnesses at the marriage were William's maternal grandmother Rosanna Carey, and Rosanna's son William. The marriage date on the certificate was April 25, 1904. (Image forwarded by a descendant, March 2010.)

A handwritten note on this certificate says 'This marriage was blessed by Jas. M. O'Neil, Feb 17, 1920, in the presence of Thos. F. O'Toole and Agnes O'Neil. (signed) Jas M. O'Neil". On the 1920 Census of East Boston there is a James J. O'Neil, clergyman, Catholic Church, living on Brook St. near Morris St. This address is around the corner from Sacred Heart Church on Paris St. and about a seven minute walk from 89 Putnam St., where William and Margaret were living in 1920. (1920 Census and Google Maps.)

When Lillian was born in 1907, the Paiges were still living in Bangor. The 1907 Bangor City Directory lists him at 365 Broadway. The 1909 Bangor directory said he had "removed to Brewer."

The Brewer Directory for 1909 says William was a baggage master for the Maine Central Railroad, and was the householder at 60 Brimmer, the same address as his father Oscar and his brother Joseph, both boarders. In 1912 William and his father were at 46 Chamberlain St., Brewer. William's brothers Joseph and Frederick were at 48 1/2 Chamberlain, and his uncle Charles was at 52 1/2.

Florence, Cecelia, and Jerome were all born in Brewer, from 1909 to 1913. In February of 1913, Margaret evidently came back to East Boston to visit her parents. Lillian and Cecelia were both baptized at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, East Boston, on February 16 of that year.

In 1914 William was still listed at 46 Chamberlain St., Brewer, but without his father. In 1915 when Charlie was born they were back in Bangor. During these years, William worked for the railroad as a fireman and as a baggage master.

By November 30, 1919, the date of the birth and death of their stillborn son in Boston, they had moved back to East Boston and were living at 89 Putnam St. They were living there with three of their children, Zeke, Cecelia, and Charles, when the 1920 census was taken. (The other three children, Lillian, Florence and Jerome, were living in Bangor with their grandmother, Martha (Cowan) Page Gray, who had remarried in December 1917.)

The 1921 Boston City Directory lists them at 89 Putnam St., and the 1922 to 1924 Directories give their address as 285 Chelsea St., also in East Boston. When their last child, James Richard, was born in 1924, the Pages were at 2985 Washington Street, Roxbury. In 1920 William was a machinist and in 1924 he was working as an elevator operator.

Searching for William Page

Sometime after their last child was born, William left his wife. In the 1928 Boston City Directory, Margaret is living in Roxbury without William. On the 1930 census taken on April 1, Margaret is listed as the head of her household. It was said by the family that his wife did not know where he was but he kept in touch with his older daughters Lillian and Florence. On the 1930 census of the William and Lillian Walsh household, Lillian's father's birthplace is "United States." This might indicate that she actually knew where he was in 1930, since there was no mystery about what state he had been born in.

A granddaughter, and the wife of a grandson, have spoken with living descendants of Lillian and Florence. The descendants know nothing of William's whereabouts after leaving his family.

When Margaret died in 1946, her death notice mentioned her "late" husband, but her death record listed him as alive, age 57. That was her age at death, his age would have been 64. But the information on the death record came from her son James who had never known his father and may not have known his correct age.

William possibly may have died by 1934, since the entry for Margaret in the 1934 and 1936 Boston City Directories describe her as a widow of Wm., or of Wm. J. But it may be that she had him declared legally dead, since she had made a search for him and it had been seven years since he was last with the family.

There is some evidence that William died before his father Oscar's death in 1943. Oscar's death notice mentions only Oscar's son Augustus. All of Oscar's other children died before him, so the death notice may be listing all his surviving children.

William is not buried in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose, where his father, mother and
his brother Augustus are buried. (Source: plot record received from descendant)

Nor with his brother Stover D.F. Page in Glenwood Cemetery, Everett.
(Source:descendant's correspondence with cemetery.) Nor in Oak Grove Cemetery,
Bucksport ME. (Correspondence from Oak Grove Cemetery Association, April 2010.)

Nor with his wife in St. Joseph's Cemetery, W. Roxbury (family knowledge and visit.)

I did not find a death record for William J. Page/Paige in Maine or Massachusetts for the years 1924 to 1997, nor in Massachusetts for 1998 to 2004. If his death was recorded it may have been under a different name. He was not found in the death records of Bucksport, ME. (Email to me from town clerk, April or May 2010.)

William J Page of Bangor and Miss Delia Reddy of Portland, have been brought here as the result of a complaint made by the girl's mother. The couple had been living in Lowell, Mass., as man and wife, so it is alleged. It is also alleged that the girl's mother was shown a fake marriage certificate and had believed her daughter married for nearly a year. Recently she heard that Page had a wife and six children in Bangor. She then swore out a warrant for his arrest.

Wedding Certificate a Fake, Page Admits
Portland, Me, March 3 - William J Page and Miss Delia F Reddy were arraigned before Judge Bates on a serious charge today, and their case was continued one week. The girl was released under $500 bail. Page told Chief Bowen this morning that the wedding certificate, which he had palmed off as genuine, is a fake, and that he had never married Miss Reddy, with whom he lived in her home, 20 Taylor St, three weeks before going to Lowell, where they were arrested. He also admitted that he has a wife and children in Bangor.

Continue Case Against Page and Miss Reddy

The case against William J Page and Miss Delia F Reddy was continued one week in the Municipal Court this Morning. Bail was furnished for the woman by her mother, Annie L Reddy, and sister, Rose E Reddy, in the some of $500. Page did not secure bail.

Arraignment was made on a serious chrge in consequence of circumstances that led Mrs Reddy to complain to the Portland police. This led to the arrest of Page and Miss Reddy, whom he claims to have married in Lowell, and they were brought here late Friday by Chief Bowen. Mrs Reddy had carried on extensive correspondence and was certain that Page had a wife and children in Bangor. Despite the claim of both Page and her daughter that they had been married, she had them arrested and there was a heart interest conference in the police station last evening at the end of which the daughter agreed with her mother, that she had been deceived.

Page still insists that the marriage certificate he has produced is genuine and that the copy which comes from Victor Brett, city clerk of Bangor, is a forgery. This one sets forth a record of the marriage of William J Page and Miss Margaret L Crimm, sometimes called Christian Jenkins, in Veazie, by Rev E. F. Pember, April 25, 1905.

The Reddy certificate is on a New Hampshire form and sets forth the marriage of Willis J Paige in that town Dec 2, 1915, by Rev Walter M Wilton with A. L. Burpee and C. O. Cotton, M.D., as witnesses. An affidavit from the town clerk there says that these are bogus names and that there is no record of any such marriage in his office.

Both pleaded not guilty this morning, the man by counsel. They were seated apart and court proceedings were brief as the State is to make further investigation to determine who is telling the truth about these matters.

Page and Delia F Reddy held in $500 Bail Each

William J Page and Delia F Reddy were held in $500 bail each, which she was able to furnish in her own case, until the May term of the Superior Court on a statutory charge. Mrs Annie L Reddy, her mother, and Rose E Reddy, her sister, are her sureties. The case was continued last week and is the result of the arrest made in Lowell at the instance of Mrs Reddy who had reason to doubt the legality of the marriage that Page insisted had been performed.

Pardon Petition

A petition for pardon was received from Willis J Page of Bangor, a prisoner in the State prison at Thomaston, through his attorney, Edward P Murray of Bangor. A hearing was assigned for the December meeting of the Governor and Council.

Page was convicted at the May term, 1917, of the supreme court at Portland of the crime of adultery and sentenced to not more than five nor less than 2 1/2 years in State prison. He writes that he has already been sufficiently punished; that he is the father of six children, the oldest of which is 13 years, and that his wife is struggling to keep the family together; that she had forgiven him, and that she desires and needs his aid in caring for the children. He feels that the ends of justice has been met and asks a pardon.

Mother Wins Tug-of-War in Court Over Her Boy
[dateline:] Bangor, Maine, May 19
Mother and grandmother had a tug-of-war over a 12-year-old boy in the Police Court this morning with so much fierceness that a policeman was called in to separate them, the mother winning by getting away with the boy.
A hearing had been given in the case of Mrs Margaret Page of Brewer, whose five children had been placed in the custody of their grandmother, Mrs Martha Page of Bangor, for proper keeping. The mother applied for custody and while the matter was being considered, she made a quick rush for the boy. No attempt was made to get the boy back today and the case will be given a further hearing next week.

LAWYER LIBERATES PAGE CHILDREN
Latest Episode in Peculiarly Persistent Effort to Take Them From Mother.

The much discussed and oft-continued case of the five Page children was before the municipal court on Friday for still another hearing. The action was brought by Miss Marion Porter, state cruelty officer, who alleged that the children were being neglected. Miss Porter was represented by O'Connor & Conquest and Harry J Chapman represented the grandmother of the children. The father is William J Page, now in Portland.

Judge Blanchard decided that the children be placed in the custody of Miss Porter until further order, but Attorney Chapman entered an appeal and informed the mother that she could take her children with her. To this Miss Porter objected, and the door of the judge's room was closed to corral the flock, but Mr Chapman opened another door and told the mother and children to go out that way, the appeal to the supreme court being sufficient to take the matter out of the jurisdiction of the lower court, in his opinion. And the Page family departed in triumph.
